IRCC introduces open work permit extension for PGWP holders
Candidates will be able to extend their Open Work Permit whose PGWP expires in 2023
and will be available to those whose PGWP expired in 2022 outside of their 90 days
grace period. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) say it will
communicate with candidates who are entitled to an extension to invite them to log into
their accounts starting on April 6, 2023.
Furthermore, PGWP is determined by the length of the international program completed
by international graduates at designated learning institutions (DLI). PGWP is widely
preferred by international graduates and they are intrigued to apply for permanent
residence. Canada hosted a whopping all-time record of 800,000 international students
in 2022.
PGWP holders make an easy transition from temporary residence (TRs) to permanent
residence (PR) and about 82 percent, nearly 98,000 PGWPs became a permanent
residence in 2022. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) recorded
more than 286,000 PGWP holders in Canada at the end of 2022.

permanent residence (PR) conversions through Express Entry.”
Canada is further targeting 465,000 immigrants by 2023 and 500,000 immigrants by
2025 respectively. Moreover, an extension on open work permit is a boon to
international graduates to apply for permanent residence. Nevertheless, open permit
workers who have already applied for permanent residence will not need to extend their
work permits from this initiative.
