As of January 30th, 2024, the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core test has been accepted for all Canadian immigration pathways, except for the Student Direct Stream (SDS). This significant change means that candidates in Express Entry managed programs, Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) candidates and individuals needing a language test for any other Canadian immigration purposes can now take the PTE Core for assessment.
What is the PTE Core?
The PTE Core is a computer-based language test that assesses everyday English skills in speaking, writing, reading, and listening within a time limit of two hours. The test is available at over 400 locations globally and is scored by both humans and AI to minimize bias. Test results are typically obtainable within two days.
The PTE Core replaces the previous PTE Essential test approved for Canadian immigration last year. It is important to note that Pearson, like other approved language testing organizations, offers multiple types of tests (e.g., PTE Academic). Therefore, immigration candidates need to ensure they take the correct test for their chosen program.
Comparison with CLB
The PTE Core test has been compared with the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB), and it is one of the five accepted language tests by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for immigration purposes. The other four accepted tests are the CELPIP General Test (English), IELTS General Training (English), TEF Canada (French), and TCF Canada (French). These tests assess language ability in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and the required scores vary based on the specific immigration program.
For example, candidates applying under the Express Entry-managed programs will need different scores based on their chosen program. Under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), candidates require a minimum CLB level of 7 for all language skills, while under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), candidates need either a minimum CLB level 7 or level 5 across all language abilities, based on the National Occupation Classification (NOC) skill level of their job.
The acceptance of the PTE Core test for Canadian immigration purposes provides candidates with more options to demonstrate their language proficiency. As the PTE Core joins the list of accepted language tests, aspiring immigrants to Canada now have a broader range of choices to meet the language requirements for their desired immigration pathway.
