The next round of invitations is going to target the candidates who submitted their profiles in 2020, as a part of the 2020 intake of the PGP. The PGP has been limited to profiles from the 2020 pool for four consecutive years. They choose randomly, like a lottery. Invitations will come through email. Sponsors should check their emails often from May 21st. All invites should be sent out within two weeks.

Eligibility for the next round of the PGP:

  • Candidates from the 2020 intake of the PGP are eligible.
  • Invitations will be sent out at random through a lottery system.
  • Profiles submitted in 2020 will be considered for the fourth consecutive year.
  • Process for receiving Permanent Residence through the PGP.
  • Ensure meeting all eligibility criteria, including being eligible to sponsor, residing in Canada, and meeting minimum necessary income levels.
  • Complete an interest to sponsor form on IRCC’s website.
  • Applicants must not have received an invitation to apply (ITA) in 2021, 2022, or 2023.
  • Check the provided email for an invitation during the reopening period and the subsequent two weeks.
  • Apply through Permanent Residence Portal or Representative Residence Portal by the deadline stated in the invitation email.

About the PGP:

  • The PGP enables Canadian citizens or permanent residents to sponsor their parents or grandparents for Canadian permanent residence, supporting IRCC’s family reunification initiatives.
  • Sponsors commit to providing for their parents and grandparents in Canada for 20 years.
  • Invitations are issued on a lottery basis and occur once a year.

Alternative Pathway: Super Visa Program

  • If not selected for the PGP, the Super Visa pathway offers an alternative for sponsoring parents and grandparents to visit Canada on an extended Visitor Visa.
  • Allows family members to stay in Canada for five years at a time, extendable for two years.
  • Applications are accepted year-round.
  • IRCC aims to process complete Super Visa applications within 112 days.
  • Between 2022 and 2023, 67% of applications were processed within this timeframe.

Sponsors and applicants for the PGP should review the eligibility requirements and ensure they meet all the criteria before the program reopens. The super visa provides an alternative pathway for those seeking to reunite with family members who aren’t selected through the PGP lottery.  For personalized advice and assistance with Canadian immigration, feel free to contact the Novus Immigration Services.
